Choosing the Right Rental Car for Your Albania Trip

The right rental car in Albania depends less on how many days you are staying and more on where you are going. A trip that stays around Tirana and the coast asks for something completely different from one that heads into the mountains with four people and their luggage.

Here is how we would think about it.

City driving and short trips

If most of your driving is in Tirana, Durrës or between the two, a small hatchback is the easy answer. Tirana's older streets are narrow, parking spaces are tight, and a compact car is simply less stressful. Something like the VW Polo or the Golf 6 handles that comfortably and uses less fuel doing it.

Long drives and the coast road

Once you are covering real distance — Tirana to Sarandë is most of a day, and the Riviera adds hours of winding road — comfort starts to matter more than size. A larger saloon like the VW Passat or the Škoda Superb makes those hours noticeably easier, and there is room for beach gear in the boot.

The Golf 7 sits between the two: small enough for the cities, settled enough for the motorway.

Families and groups

Five adults plus a week of luggage does not fit in a hatchback, whatever the spec sheet says. For larger groups the VW Touran gives you seven seats and the space to use them. If you are travelling with children, mention it when you get in touch so we can sort out seating before you arrive.

Manual or automatic

Manual gearboxes are the norm in Albania and there are more of them available. If you would prefer an automatic — worth considering if you are not used to hill starts on mountain roads — ask early, because there are fewer of them and they go first in summer.
